We put GAF asphalt shingles on most of the roofs we do, and metal on homes where the owner plans to stay a long time. Here's what each one is like to live with.
GAF is one of the largest roofing manufacturers in North America, and its shingles are what we install on most homes. Architectural shingles are thicker and layered, handle wind better than flat 3-tab shingles and come in a wide range of colors. We'll bring samples to the estimate so you can see them against your siding in daylight.
Standing seam hides the fasteners under raised seams and needs little upkeep. Exposed-fastener panels cost less and suit shops, barns and porches. Metal costs more up front than shingles and lasts a good deal longer.
| Asphalt shingles | Metal | |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical life | About 20 to 25 years | Often double that |
| Best for | Most homes, any budget | Staying in the house long term |
The shingles are only the top layer. Underlayment, drip edge, flashing and attic ventilation decide how long they last. Our shingle roofing page goes through each one.
