Three-tab shingles are flat and uniform. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker and layered, which gives the roof more depth, handles wind better and usually lasts longer. Most new installs today are architectural, and the price gap is smaller than people expect.
Darker shingles hide streaking and look sharp on brick; lighter ones reflect more heat. It's worth looking at samples against your siding and trim in daylight before you decide.
